Birth Notes: Husband - John Henry Vines

The 1850 United States Census states that John was born in Alabama, United States of America

General Notes: Husband - John Henry Vines

John Henry Vines was living in Carroll Co., Ga. in the home of his father Isaiah Bradford Vines, according to the 1860 Census (this information provided by Wilma Thedford).

John joined the Confederate Army in May 1861 in Saline Co., Arkansas. He served in the Falcon Guards, which later became Company E, 11th Arkansas infantry. He was captured on April 8, 1862 and served 6 months at Camp Butler near Springfield, Illinois. He was exchanged along with 1180 other prisoners at Vicksburg, Mississippi on Sept. 20, 1962. He rejoined his company near Jackson after he was paroled and served until July 1865.

After the Civil War, he married Margaret Burns and had a family by her. She, along with some of her children died about 1879. Then John married a widow lady, Mahazy Ellen Russell Lewis, with two children. Together they had a large family. In his declining years he filed for a pension in March 1903 from the state of Arkansas. He drew, at first, $25.00 and then was increased to $33.50. He drew this pension until his death in 1923 and his widow, Mahazy Ellen, drew the widows pension until her death, date is unknown. Pension records for her was date 1924, so we know she died after 1924. Tom Vines' daughter, Jean, recalls sitting on her grandmothers lap & was given an apple. Jean was born in 1921, so 1924 would be about right for her death.

Arkansas Confederate Veterans and Widows application # 19614.

Wilma Thedford list John Henry being born 3 Jun 1836 while Jim & Mary Pat Young list his birth as 3 Jun 1837. His obituary list 3 Jun 1836. I have chosen to list 1836 as his birth date.

I received a copy of John Henry's obituary from Wilma Thedford.

*** OBITUARY OF GRANDFATHER VINES ***

John H. Vines was born in the state of Georgia June 3, 1836. Just lacking three days of being 87 years of age at the time of his death which occurred May 30, 1923 at the home of his son Thomas, who lived in the vicinity of Hope, Ark, Hempstead county. He lived in his native state near Atlanta, until he was eighteen years of age, when he joined theConfederate army and served until the end of the war, after which he came to Arkansas and was married Margaret Burns, to whom was born five children, Mrs. Ella Hodnott, Mrs Ida Ratcliff (whose death occurred 22 years ago,) Mrs Lula Starnes and Walter Vines. The wife and mother of this family departed this life 44 years ago. Her remains are buried in the New Hope cemetery near the primitive Baptist Church where he and his wife and some of the children held membership for years.

Some years later he was married to Hayes Lewis, and of this family were six children, Three sons, Thad, Lum, and Thomas, and three daughters, Mrs Fanny Arnold, Mrs Gordie Rodgers and Mrs Maude Burns. The latter preceded her father in death about two months. Besides the aged companion, there are 26 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He has always been an active an industrious man being held in high esteem by his friends who were counted as many.

He of later years has held membership with his wife and some of the family at the Ebeneezer church of Baptist faith. On his 80th birthday, his children began to hold an annual reunion of the family in of the aged couple. Each year on June 3rd, they were permitted to be together enjoying a bounteous repast and always some good old time songs were sung in praise to the "Giver of every good gift" that we receive.

In May he was stricken with his last sickness from which he could not rally, and just three days before his 87th birthday, he was called to the reunion of the Saints who are waiting the home coming of the God's family to all be gathered safely home. "What a gathering of the faithful there will be."

One son, Lum Vines, and two daughters, Mrs Ella Hodnott and Mrs Lula Starnes were not present at the funeral, sickness preventing the daughters from attending. The family of this dear old father have the sympathy of all their friends in their bereavement and they are grateful for the kindness shown them in their time of sorrow. Internment was made in the cemetery near Ebeneezer church and funeral services were held at the church May 31st.

"When our days of life are ended and our trails are all o'er we then will join the glad reunion there to dwell forever more."

Written by request of some of the Family.
A friend of the family, MRS H. B. SANDFORD

NOTES:
--This was published in the Arkansas Herald Monday, June 11, 1923
--The Ebeneezer cemetery where John Henry was buried is now New Hope. Not to be confused by another New Hope cemetery where his 1st wife was buried along with some of their children on Patmos Rd.
--Unfortunately, in the obituary, one son, Henry Allen Vines, was not listed. Five children were mentioned but listed only four by Margaret Burns.
