Obituary - copies can be obtained from Charlie Vines
After an extended illness covering a period of about two years, J. B. Williams died at his home in Wolfe City on Monday, September 16th, at 5 o'clock. For two months he had been confined to his bed and during this time he endured much intense suffering. He was a most and hopeful sufferer and seemed determined to live in spite of the grapple of the death angle, but this messenger finally subdued him and seperated spirit and body.
He was born in the year of 1850 at his father's home two miles west of town and grew up to manhood there. He passed through the civil war as a boy and had much experience incident to that period of time in this sparsely settled section.
When young he married Miss Lou Garrett, who lived but a few months, leaving a baby girl, who is now Mrs. Milton Webb. Later he married Miss Victoria Hutson, and to this union were born seven children, four of whom are living. These are Mrs. Claude Vaden, of Wolfe City, Hiram D. Williams of Aberfoyle, Mrs. Webb Wilson, near town, and Paul Williams who is at home with his mother.
J. B. Williams had many good virtues in the make up of his character. He professed Christianity about twenty years ago and was faithful to the end. A friend asked him a short time before he died if all was well with him and his God and his reply was, "Yes, I am sure ready to go". He was a member of the Masonic order, to which he was devoted, never missing a meeting when able to attend. He lived and dealt with his fellow man on the great principles of honesty and justice. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a faithful friend. A good man has left the walks of men and those who have known him will miss him. The home will have a vacant chair, the church will have a vacant pew, the Masonic Hall a vacant seat, and the hearts of his loved ones will feel the pang of an aching void.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. B. Davidson, his pastor, at the Methodist Church, and was attended by a large congregation of relatives and friends. He was laid away in Mount Carmel cemetery amid a profusion of beautiful flowers. Though he is gone and we shall see him no more, Till we meet on the banks of the evergreen shore, Still in the memory his noble virtues will live, And to loved ones and friends much comfort will give.
General Notes: Wife - Louisa V. Garrett
May have been born 1853 or 1855.
